Tutorial by itsphotoshop.

I use Photoshop CS6.
Like/reblog the post if you find it useful.

How to make one-color gifs

  • Step 1. Make your gif as normal. Mine is 245x150px. Sharpen, add an action, a psd… etc. I used this psd by allison-lydia and I changed it a bit.
  • Step 2. Go to Layer > New adjustment layer > Gradient map. If your gradient is not black&white, go to the Properties window and click here:

    image

A new window will appear. Click on the bottom-left arrow and change the color to black. Then click on the bottom-right arrow and change it to white:

    image

Now your gif should look like this:

    image

  • Step 3. Go to Layer > New fill layer > Color fill and select the color you want. Then change its blending mode from “Normal” to “Multiply”.

    image

………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Gif 1. The color I used for this gif is #fbf792.

image

  • Step 1. For this gif I only used 2 layers. I added this pattern, and changed it to “Soft light”, opacity: 40%.

    image

    image
  • Step 2. Then I added this texture in Soft light (opacity 100%). And that’s all!

………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Gif 2. The color I used for this gif is #70d9ef.

image

  • Step 1.  For this gif I added the text first. Make the text box exactly like the gif:

    image

My font is Bell MT and the size is 14pt. Make sure these are your settings in the topbar:

    image

I also changed the lines separation to 11pt. You can change that in the Character window:

    image

I selected the words “literally” and “freakin’” and made them italic by clicking here:

    image

I typed enter a few times and my text is moreless in the middle. If you want it exactly in the middle check Step 3 of the 3rd gif.

    image

  • Step 2. Now I added a grainy gif.

I used this one I found somewehere over the rainbow.
Open it with photoshop. You’ll see it only has 6 frames. Select all the frames and duplicate them by clicking on this icon at the bottom of the Animation window:

    image

What you must do you is make the grainy gif have as many frames as the other gif has. In my case, my gif (not the grainy one) has 48 frames. So I have to select the 6 frames of the grainy gif and duplicate them until there are 48 frames. In my case, 48 is a multiple of 6; but imagine my gif has 46 frames instead of 48: I have to duplicate them until there are 48 frames and delete the last 2 frames. I hope you understand me.

So, now there are 2 ways of moving the grainy gif into the other one.

    1. If you converted to timeline and smart objects the other gif, then you have to do the same with the grainy one, and then just drag it to the other one.

    2. If you didn’t conver to timeline and smart objects, you have to select all the frames of the grainy gif, click on this icon that’s in the Animation window image and click Copy frames. Then go to the other gif, select all the frames, click on the same icon > Paste frames > Paste over selection.
Then select all the layers of the grainy gif and go to Layer > Group layers.

After that you have to change the blending mode of the grainy gif (the smart object / group) to “Multiply” (opacity = 25%).
You can always try other blending modes and opacitys. If you want the dots white insead of black then change to “Screen”.

Gif 3. The color I used for this gif is #7fd079, but at the end I changed it to #a2e19d because the other one is kinda dark.

image

  • Step 1. First I added a pattern. You can download it here. Drag it to the gif and change it from “Normal” to “Screen”. Then change its opacity to 30%.

    image

    image

  • Step 2. Now you have to add the text. Make a text box exactly like the gif:

    image

My font is Intro (download) and its size is 29pt. Make sure these are your settings in the topbar:

    image

I also changed the lines separation to 24pt. You can change that in the Character window:

    image

  • Step 3. To make sure the text is moreless in the middle I typed enter two times, and it looks like this:

    image

But it’s not in the middle and I want it to be exactly in the middle. I still haven’t figured out a way to make objets move to the middle the canvas. This is what I do to see if they’re in the middle:

    1. Select the Rectangular marquee tool.
    2. Make a rectangle from the top of the canvas to the top of the text:
      image

    3. Move the rectangle to the bottom of the canvas:

      image

    4. Realizing there’s a space between the top of the rectangle and the bottom of the text.
    5. Right click > Deselect.
    6. Move the text down a little.
    7. Repeat the process until there’s no space between the rectangle and the text, like this:

      image
      image

    Right click > Deselect.

And that’s the way I make sure things are in the middle.  It looks complicated, but it’s really easy once you get used to it.

  • Step 4. Change the text from “Normal” to “Overlay” and the opacity to 70%.

    image

Duplicate the text layer (Layer > Duplicate layer), and change the duplicated one to “Soft light” (the opacity is the same). Then move it a little bit to the left, and that’s how I made the kind of 3D effect:

    image
  • Step 5 (not necessary). At the end I realized the color of the gif was to dark, so I changed it to another green (#a2e19d).

That’s all! If you don’t understand something, just ask :)
